Over time, full-service and fast-food restaurants have become increasingly important to U.S. consumers’ diets. Between 1977 and 2018, the share of food energy coming from fast food rose from 5.9 to 16.3 percent and the restaurant share more than doubled from 3.3 to 7.8 percent.
