Growth in rural eldercare establishments is concentrated among home healthcare services. Since 2010, almost all growth in eldercare establishments in rural areas originated from home healthcare services, an industry that grew steadily over the last 13 years and finished the third quarter of 2023 with 36 percent more establishments than in the first quarter of 2010. Meanwhile, facility-based care, such as care at assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, remained relatively stable. More specifically, the number of continuing care and assisted living facilities decreased by 0.4 percent and skilled nursing facilities grew by 1.5 percent during the same period. This figure appears in Rural America at a Glance: 2024 Edition.
