Pumpkins are grown in all 50 States and were harvested from more than 99,000 acres on about 15,000 farms, according to the latest comprehensive data from the 2022 Census of Agriculture published by USDA, National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). Illinois farmers harvested the most area with nearly 18,800 acres in 2022, representing 19 percent of the U.S. total. Indiana follows with about 7,000 acres (7 percent). Texas ranked third in pumpkin area harvested with about 6,400 acres (6 percent). Across the United States, pumpkins grown on the majority of harvested area (85 percent) are intended for either fresh or ornamental pumpkin markets, including pumpkins sold for seasonal decoration, jack-o’-lantern carving, and direct consumption. Other acreage is devoted to processing pumpkins grown for canned and pureed products such as pie fillings, soups, and other prepared foods. Unlike the fresh market, processing production is concentrated near canning facilities, with Illinois as the top producer.
