SNAP participation, poverty, and unemployment, 1980-2010

A chart showing SNAP and FSP participants, people in poverty, and unemployed people, years 1980 to 2010.

Thirty years of data from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and its predecessor the Food Stamp Program (FSP) show that the number of poor people and the number of SNAP/FSP participants continue to rise, even as the number of unemployed people levels off. This chart was published in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program briefing room on the ERS website in March 2011.
