Since its inception in the 1930s, the Federal Crop Insurance Program has evolved into a key Federal support program for agriculture in the United States. Producer participation in the program has grown since 1990. In 2024, roughly 89 percent of acreage of eight major U.S. field crops (barley, corn, cotton, oats, rice, sorghum, soybeans, and wheat) were enrolled in FCIP—a 52 percentage point increase from 1990.
