This disk contains 1960s data on land use change in fast population growth
counties in the United States. Two Economic Research Service (ERS) reports
are based on the data:
Zeimetz, Kathryn A., Elizabeth Dillon, Ernest E. Hardy, and Robert
C. Otte. 1976. ?S?UDynamics of land use in fast growth areas??Q. AER-235.
ERS, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, D.C.
Zeimetz, Kathryn A., Elizabeth Dillon, Ernest E. Hardy, and Robert
C. Otte. 1976. Using area point samples and airphotos to estimate land
use change. ?S?UAgricultural Economics Research??Q 28(2): 65-74.
Similar data is available from ERS on land use change for the decade of
the 1970s.
Files include:
1. README -- This file.
2. ZMATRIX -- A land use transition matrix for 53 fast-growth counties.
3. Z53-MTX -- Land use transition matrices for each of 53 fast-growth
counties. Counties are identified by state and FIPS code.
4. Z73-SOC -- Socioeconomic data for 53 fast-growth and 20 no-growth
counties. Includes rural, urban, and total population;
income; employment; number of families; and housing units.
Data is from U.S. Bureau of the Census.
5. Z53-PRD -- Land use change data in tabular form for 53 fast-growth
counties.
6. Z20-PRD -- Land use change data in tabular form for 20 no-growth
counties in the corn belt.
Land codes and use classes:
1 Cropland 7 Urban idle
2 Pasture & range 8 Transportation
3 Open idle 9 Recreation
4 Farmstead 10 Commercial, Industrial, Institutional
5 Forest 11 Water bodies > 40 acres
6 Residential 12 Miscellaneous
Matrices of land use show acres of late use in the last row. Early use is
shown in the right column. Numbers in each matrix show land use change
from early to late dates, except for the diagonal which shows use remaining
unchanged. Dates for each county differ, depending on availability of
photography.
