Profiles of America: Documentation

Contents

Profiles of America currently contains about 100 variables related to the socioeconomic status of the population and settlement patterns within the United States from 1990 to 2003. All data are derived from four main sources: the Economic Research Service (ERS), the Census Bureau, the Bureau of Economic Analysis, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Initial county metro-nonmetro definitions used by ERS are based upon their official status announced by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) in June 2003. ERS used OMB's definition to develop alternative classifications of rural places that capture the diversity of rural America in ways that are meaningful for developing public policies and programs.

The demographic indicators are organized by eight broad topics:

Various ERS rural indicators are also available:

important geographic changes

Users should be aware that the county structure of the Unites States has changed over time, especially the "Census Boroughs" of Alaska. See the Census Bureau's Significant Changes to Counties and County Equivalent Entities: 1970-Present for more information on boundary changes.

caution in using BEA variables in Virginia and Hawaii

The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) has created unique FIPS codes for certain geographic regions within Virginia and Hawaii. In general, they have combined independent cities with nearby counties and report a single number for the combined areas. Profiles of America uses the 2000 county definitions as maintained by the U.S. Census Bureau. Special care must be taken when interpreting tables and maps of Hawaii and Virginia for BEA variables.

In tables, the State and county totals are correct. However, the labeling of the county names and independent city combinations may not match those used by BEA. For example, BEA has created a special FIPS code (51901) for Albemarle county VA plus the independent city of Charlottesville. In 1990 BEA reports there were 81,513 jobs in this combined geographic area. Profiles will report the correct number of jobs for this area, 81,513. However, Profiles will use the standard FIPS code (51003) and label for Albemarle county and not the unique BEA FIPS code (51901) or label “Albemarle + Charlottesville”. The table below summarizes the discordance between Profiles 2000 county definitions and labels as maintained by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the unique BEA definitions.

The mapping portion of Profiles also uses 2000 county definitions and labels. For technical reasons we were unable to reprogram the underlying geographic layer definitions to recognize the unique BEA codes or to disaggregate the data for the independent city from its “parent” county. Thus, some independent cities in Virginia have no data and are coded white.

The demographic variables that are affected by this caution are:

Employment and Unemployment: Total Number of Jobs 1990; Total Number of Jobs 2000; Total Number of Jobs 2001; Total Number of Jobs 2002; Change in the Number of Jobs 1990-2000; Change in the Number of Jobs 2000-2002; Job Change Rate 1990-2000; Job Change Rate 2000-2002.

Income and Poverty: Earnings Per Job 2001; Earnings Per Job 2002; Per Capita Income 2001; Per Capita Income 2002.
