The ERS China agricultural and economic database is a collection
of agricultural-related data from official statistical publications
of the People's Republic of China. Most of these data items are
published only in China; some are only available in
Chinese-language publications. This product is a partial update of
Agricultural Statistics of the People's Republic of China, 1949-90,
USDA/ERS Statistical Bulletin 844, December 1992.
In the database, there are 250 items available at the national
level, and 45 crop, livestock, agricultural output, and population
items available at the provincial level.
Why This Product Is Important
China is one of the world's most important agricultural
economies and a major player in international markets for many
agricultural commodities. Analysts and policy professionals around
the world need information about the rapidly changing Chinese
economy, but statistics are often published only in China and
sometimes only in Chinese-language publications. This product
assembles a wide variety of data items covering production, inputs,
prices, food consumption, output of industrial products relevant to
the agricultural sector, and the macroeconomy.
ERS attempts to ensure the quality and timeliness of this
database but cannot guarantee the statistics in the database are
accurate or up to date. The data are subject to revisions by
statistical authorities in China and may be of questionable
accuracy. Users should familiarize themselves with the potential
inaccuracies and limitations of China's statistical data.
ERS China data collection, reporting, and interpretation has
been aided by close ties with important statistical and market
analysis agencies in the People's Republic of China, including the
National Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture, and
National Grain and Oils Information Center. Travel to China and
acquisition of publications has been aided by financial support
from USDA's Emerging Markets Program and the U.S.-China scientific
