Exports account for a large share of the total volume of U.S. production for select product categories. For example, more than 70 percent of the volume of U.S. production of tree nuts, largely almonds, is exported, as is around 64 percent of cotton production (2008-10 average). Overall, the export share of U.S. agricultural production was 22 percent based on volume, and has averaged 20 percent since 2000.
