High crude-oil prices and Federal biofuel-use mandates have led to increased biodiesel production in the past decade. About a quarter of soybean-oil use goes to biodiesel production, and about half of U.S. biodiesel output uses soybean oil as an input. Food usage is the primary use of soybean oil, although lower food use since 2004/05 reflects concerns about trans fatty acids, which are created when vegetable oils are hydrogenated.
