Food accounts for 15 percent of American households’ expenditures

With a 15.0 percent share, food ranked third behind housing (38.4 percent) and transportation (20.5 percent) in a typical American household’s 2012 expenditures. Food’s share of consumer expenditures is down from 17 percent in 1984, as the share of income spent on housing, health care, and entertainment each rose slightly.
