Wyoming Schools Get Failing Grade in Nutrition (Associated Press, July 18, 2006)

Food Assistance Research Brief—A Healthy School Meal Environment. Schools can encourage healthy food choices by participants in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. Important factors in those choices include nutritional quality, variety, and acceptability of meals; meal scheduling; nutrition education; and sales of non-USDA foods.

Food Assistance Research Brief—Competitive Foods: Soft Drinks vs. Milk. "Competitive foods"—those available in schools in addition to USDA-provided school meals—have lower nutritional quality than school meals. ERS reviews current information on the impact of competitive foods in school meal programs and presents a case study on competitive items.

Understanding U.S. Farm Exits. The rate of exits from farming (about 9 or 10 percent per year) is slightly higher than the entry rate. Current studies focus on how the processes of entry and exit are linked to productivity growth and the spread of innovation. ERS examines the numbers as well as the forces driving farm exits.

Wheat Backgrounder. U.S. wheat plantings are about 30 percent lower than in the early 1980s. Wheat demand fell with changing consumer preferences and strong competition in export markets. Low returns led to substitution of competing crops. Backgrounder addresses domestic and global market and policy developments affecting the wheat sector.

Partial Interests in Land: Policy Tools for Resource Use and Conservation. Partial interests in land include conservation easements, mineral rights, farmland rental agreements, and other elements of land ownership. Partial interests can be acquired and conveyed in different ways to accomplish resource use and conservation objectives on public and private land.

Price Premiums Hold on as U.S. Organic Produce Market Expands. Price premiums for organic products have contributed to growth in certified organic farmland and to market expansion. ERS examines price premiums and market margins for three fresh produce items: carrots, broccoli, and mesclun mix.
