U.S. Fruit and Vegetable Imports Outpace Exports. The United States traditionally a net exporter of fruits and vegetables, has become a large net importer, with imports more than doubling between 1994 and 2004 to reach $12.7 billion. Due to geographic proximity and low or zero tariffs, Canada and Mexico are among the largest sources and destinations of U.S. trade in fruits and vegetables.

Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Outlook: Brazilian Meat Industry. The October 2005 outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Brazil’s major beef producing state raised concerns for the Brazilian meat industry because of the implications for the domestic market and for meat exports.

Traceability in the U.S. Food Supply: Economic Theory and Industry Studies. Traceability systems generate information on the flow of food and food products and aid in tracking food to its source. ERS examined the amount, type, and adequacy of traceability systems, focusing on fresh produce, grains and oilseeds, and cattle/beef.

Livestock, Dairy and Poultry Situation (December). An uncertain export market situation, rising stocks, and a rise in production in October placed downward pressure on most broiler prices. Cold storage holdings for the end of the third quarter were revised upward by 18 million pounds. Prices for breast meat products and leg quarters in November were down from last year.
