Americans are eating more fish than ever - 4pounds more per person per year, on average, than in the 1970s, according to the U.S. Economic Research Service.

USDA Raises Dairy-Price Forecast but Keeps Food Inflation Steady

The U.S. Department of Agriculture held its food price-inflation forecast steady at 3% to 4% for 2011. The monthly analysis of the consumer-price index for food tracks retail prices for a range of household staples, from bakery products to beef to vegetables….  While increases in dairy prices prompted an increase in the dairy forecast, prices fell for a number of other commodities," said Richard Volpe, research economist for the USDA.

U.S. Rice Production Projected at 211 Million cwt

The first forecast for the 2011-2012 U.S. rice crop pegs production at 211 million cwt, down 13 percent from a year earlier, according to Rice Outlook report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service.

Meat, Dairy Lead Grocery Price Increases

A federal study finds food prices will take a bigger bite out of Iowans’ food budgets this year. Rick Volpe, an economist with the U-S Department of Agriculture [ERS], says a trip to the grocery store will mean either less food in your cart or less money in your wallet.

The graphic is an overview from the recently launched Food Desert Locator, which provides detailed information about food access. According to the USDA's Economic Research Service, 13.5 million people fit the criteria of living in one of these areas.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture [ERS] unveiled its Food Desert Locator, an interactive map that allows you to zoom down to the census tract level. Areas in pink are considered areas with limits access to supermarkets or large grocery stores.

Nearly 13.5 million Americans live in areas where it is hard to find healthy food and fresh produce for a reasonable price. The U.S. Department of Agriculture calls these regions "food deserts," and it has created a new tool [ERS] that uses Census data to map out these areas. The tool allows users to enter specific addresses or zoom in to get street-level mapping.
