Does Banning use of Food Stamps for Soda Reduce Obesity?
Washington Post – August 21, 2011
To start, financial barriers to soda do look like they lower consumption but not by a whole lot. This idea is discussed in a 2007 USDA [ERS] report, “How Do Low Income Households React To Food Prices?” The study looks at what happens in low-income households when you reduce the price of reduced-fat milk or increase the price of soda, by 10 percent each.

The USDA even has a Food Desert Locator, where you can enter an address, or a city, and see areas of unacceptably low access to healthy food displayed in pink on a map.

Like so many farmers, we aren't able to live off the farm income alone (Yet). … The USDA's Economic Research Service reports that in 2009 almost 45 percent of American farmers and their spouses work off the farm. Almost 45 percent of farmers claim farm or ranch work as their primary job.

Inflation is expected across the economy, according Ephraim Leibtag, Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service economist. Leibtag noted that grocery prices are rising, with dairy and meat among the chief offenders.

Price Spikes are Self-Correcting

During the past 40 years, five periods of large increases in agricultural prices were followed by sharp declines. A sixth price surge began in July 2010, reported USDA economist Ron Trostle….  However, such price spikes tend to be self-correcting, said Trostle.
