U.S. Ethanol Expansion Driving Changes Throughout the Agricultural Sector.  A large expansion in ethanol production is underway in the United States, spurred by high oil prices and energy policies.  Although corn is the primary feedstock used to produce ethanol in the United States, market adjustments to the ethanol expansion extend well beyond the corn sector.

Profits, Costs, and the Changing Structure of Dairy Farming.  U.S. dairy farming is undergoing dramatic changes, driven by both supply and demand factors. Consumption is shifting from fluid milk, generally produced for local markets, toward manufactured products, such as cheese, and dairy-based ingredients for national and global markets. Milk production is shifting toward Western States such as California, Idaho, and New Mexico, and to much larger farms.

Louisiana Rice Yield Heading for Record (Associated Press, December 2, 2007)

From ERS

Rice Outlook. The 2007/08 U.S. rough-rice crop forecast was raised 5.2 from the previous month’s forecast to million cwt to 197.1 million cwt, the result of a higher yield.  At 7,215 pounds per acre, the yield is the highest on record.  Production estimates were raised this month for all States except Missouri.
