Direct and Indirect Costs of Food Safety Regulation—The compliance costs of the Pathogen Reduction Hazard Analysis Critical Control Program rule have been controversial. This article addresses weaknesses in earlier evaluations of compliance costs based on limited data by examining these costs with data from a national survey of meat and poultry plants. Results indicate that (1) regulation favors large, more specialized plants over small, diversified ones; (2) private actions incur considerable costs, and (3) with the exception of chicken slaughter, Federally mandated processing tasks are 160-500 per cent more costly than allowing plants to choose their own food safety technology to meet standards. Economic Cost of Guillain-Barré Syndrome in the United States—Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare but serious form of temporary paralysis that is triggered by certain infections, including foodborne illness due to Campylobacter jejuni. ERS estimated the annual economic cost of illness due to GBS from all causes to be $1.7 billion (in 2004 dollars), based on data from a national hospital survey, a telephone survey of adult GBS patients, and other sources. The proportion of GBS cases caused by Campylobacter infections is uncertain, but might be as high as 40 percent.
