National data useful in food and nutrition assistance research—Brief descriptions of national surveys and data sets with links to the sponsoring organizations.

FANRP Project Descriptions—The FANRP program has an extensive portfolio of research projects covering diet and health outcomes, food program targeting and delivery, and program dynamics and administration.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Data System—The SNAP Data System provides time-series data on State and county-level estimates of SNAP participation and benefit levels, combined with area estimates of total population and the number of persons in poverty. It also has an interactive web-based mapping application that maps program participation and benefit levels with county level detail for the States and the Nation.

Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement—Now available from the Census Bureau on CD-ROM and on-line via the DataFerrett system. The CPS Food Security Supplement is a nationally representative survey of about 50,000 U.S. households conducted by the Census Bureau for ERS annually since 1995. The data include information on household food security, food expenditures, use of public and private food assistance programs, and other information on how households cope with limited food budgets.

The National Household Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS)—ERS's newly funded survey will provide unique and detailed data about household food choices that are not available in any other survey. FoodAPS is a nationally representative survey of household food purchases and acquisitions, including foods purchased for consumption at home and away from home as well as foods acquired through food and nutrition assistance programs (both public and private).
