Food and Agricultural Policy-Taking Stock for the New Century (USDA)—Details the important changes that have taken place in U.S. agriculture and which continue to affect the U.S. food and farm sector. Offers a set of principles to guide policy development for trade, a farm safety net, system infrastructure, conservation and environment, rural communities, nutrition and food assistance, and program delivery.

USDA Agriculture Fact Book 2000—General information about U.S. agriculture and all USDA programs. Also provides useful information about food safety, nutrition, rural issues, research, education, and natural resources.

USDA-NAL, Alternative Farming Systems Information Center—Specializes in locating and accessing information related to alternative cropping systems including sustainable, organic, low-input, biodynamic, and regenerative agriculture. AFSIC also focuses on alternative crops, new uses for traditional crops, and crops grown for industrial production.

Sustainable Agricultural Research and Education Program (SARE)—USDA-funded initiative that sponsors competitive grants for sustainable agriculture research and education in a regional process nationwide.

Women in Agriculture and Rural Life: An International Bibliography—Published to coincide with the Second International Conference on Women in Agriculture, Washington D.C., USA June 28-July 2, 1998.

Data

National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), USDA—A wide range of survey-based information about U.S. agriculture.

Census of Agriculture, NASS—Detailed data on farm operations in the United States, conducted every 5 years, including commodity production, inventory, land operated, income, expenses, farm assets, and operator and operation characteristics. Data are available electronically at the U.S., State, and county levels.

USDA-NASS The 1999 Agricultural Economics and Land Ownership Survey—A follow on survey to the 1997 U.S. Agricultural Census. Provides U.S and state level statistics on indebtedness, expenditures, income, and assets for both farm operators and landlords. This report also includes measures of credit used for purchases and expenditures, debt by type of lender, assets, off-farm income, and other land ownership data.

USDA-NASS Published Estimates Database—U.S., state, and county level agricultural statistics for several commodities and estimation programs.

U.S. Farm Numbers—This annual full-text file presents data on the number of farms in operation, land in farms, and average size (acreage) of farms for individual states and the U.S.; includes economic sales class estimates for number of farms, land in farms, and average of farms for U.S. and selected states.

U.S. Agricultural Land Values and Cash Rents—Provides state and national data on agricultural land values and cash rents.

U.S. Total Productivity—Provides estimates of the growth and relative levels of productivity for the United States and 48 contiguous States for 1948-2004.

Production Supply and Distribution Database (PS&D)—The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) official, short-term quantity forecast of annual supply and use by country and by commodity for 62 commodities and more than 200 countries and regions in the world.
